Service discovery is the automatic detection of devices and offered services over a network. Discovery, which minimizes configuration efforts for administrators, is commonly found in microservice architectures and containerization platforms.
Where a service is (IP and DNS name)
Because in AWS services have dynamic IPs and DNS names
Service instances (eg. VMs or Containers) write their IP or DNS name in service registry. 
Service registry key value pairls
Client side Service discovery: Client service is responsible for network location and load balance across them.
Services register their IP and DNS name when they startup 
IP of service is removed using a Heartbeat Mechanism. 
NO balancer required. eg. Ribbon Client side load balancer

Server side service discovery
Load balancer needed. 
Load balancer queries the service registory
It routes the traffic to target microservice. 
eg. In AWS Elastic Application LOad Balancer. Target Group

eg. ETCD(In K8s_
   HASHICORP CONSUL
   Apache Zookeeper.
   Two Patterns:- 1. Self Registration 
   Services register and deregister themselves
   2. Third party registration : Third party system does . It keeps looking if it finds
   It constantly keeps sending health checking signals.
