You have to change the way you link to the remote origin
So first of all if you've already linked the repo to a remote origin, you'll have to rename that remote origin to eg. old_origin like so ...
git remote rename origin old_origin
Then add the new origin with your username, the repository owners username and project repository name like so ...
git remote add origin https://{your_gitlab_username}@gitlab.com/{repo_owner_gitlab_username}/project_repo.git
